Just had another 2 weeks in Halki, arrived back last Wednesday . As always had a fabulously relaxing time. Met some great people, hi Bob and Joan it was great to meet you and also Tina and Dave, our friendly beach neighbours and Barbara and Alex. Our favorite restaurant was the grill house this year just like Sunfun and I believe it is also Bob and Joan's favourite too Weather was the best yet, 2 weeks of wall to wall sun. We did have a couple of very windy days although the sun kept shining. Trust our luck we had booked the catamaran to Tilos on 1 of these days ! Ended up very queasy. Although we are experiencing the usual withdrawal symptoms we do have 1 week to look forward to in September which is helping a little

Thanks Jude, it was great to meet you and Steve also. Thanks to Bob and Joan for recommending the grill house, it was our favourite as well although the taverna with the 'tartan' table cloths came a close second. This was our first visit to Halki and like many, we wished we had discovered it earlier. We thought it was a magical place and we will definitely return soon. Seriously fed up at the moment!

Carol - We will updating you on our 4 weeks stay shortly. I have been busy since we got back last Wednesday with Crown Green Bowling, most of which wearing waterproofs. Thanks, Jude, & Davina for the mention. It was a pleasure to meet you but all too briefly. ;D

Good to hear that you had a great time again Jude. Sounds like Avra has been toppled by the fairly new grill house. Must be really good then. We had breakfast there prior to catching the ferry home last year but confess that we have not had an evening meal since it has opened. Not very intrepid really. After some dozen years or so we have kind of sorted out our favourites!!
Anybody see any daytrippers or did everyone go to Fteniaga? Maybe they will not start until July!
We did Tilos early in June about 4 years ago and Halki early September. Terrible Cat crossing to Tilos which the wife hated. Thankfully I do not suffer. It was markedly different from Halki in that a number of the restaurants are away from the harbour and the Faros, one of the better ones, was the very last at the end of the bay. A long walk but worth it.
The big grill place mentioned was very good and consequently very busy. Not always good service though.
Beach is shingle but some areas of sand when you get into the water shallows. We didn't pay for sunbeds situated in front of sea front hotels but it was courtesy to use their lunchtime taverna for snacks etc. Toilet facility only in hotels!
Annas self catering studio up the hill was excellent . Hire car was easy and allowed us to see other parts of the island although we did take an early bus excursion to the old village inland.
All in all, somewhere different but we decided quickly and unanimously that Halki was still very much our favourite. Sadly, last year the day trippers savaged our holiday which is why we are keen to find out if that was a one off or if it is an annual July thing!
Any updates from recent returnees would be invaluable.

Hi J90 We like the grill house not only for the food but for the really lovely and friendly hosts, Elina and Valentis. You must try it next time in the evening. Also we had lunch there a few times as they do fantastic gyros pitas, well worth the trek from the beach for this ;D
I posted about the day trippers on the day tripper thread a few days ago. As you will read it wasn't so bad this year. ;D

j90 - The Valantis Grill House is, as far as we are concerned, the best on Halki. Valantis & Elena are a wonderful couple and the food is superb. I don't know what you mean by "not very intrepid". Maybe you think that because they do a Gyros it might be beneath your taste. If you like great grills then try it , you might even go again instead of waiting for the last day when waiting for the Ferry. Jude - Totally agree with your comments.

bobandjane,
It has been a basic understanding that The Valentis Grill was more of a snack place rather than a restaurant, however that has quickly changed. My father was simply expressing his lack of intrepidity with regards to trying something new.
With all due respect I resent the implication that my father would find anywhere 'Beneath' his tastes. Such use of words are unjustified and un-necessary!
For the record I have used The Valentis Grill and found it excellent, but like many others I like to spread myself around and use several of the restaurants.
Avra and Babis are my favourites.

Fair enough Liz, but I hope you can see my disappointment! People need to be more thoughtful in what they say!
