hello, has anybody been in Halki in the last weeks ? are the beaches ok now ? We´ve been there in February, no sand at Pondamos and a lot of trash from the sea - and Ftenaia was closed. Is it possible to swim in May ? have never been therre so early - only in summer. Can´t wait Maria

Hi Maria. We got back on 26th May. Can't comment on Pondamos as we didn't go there, but Ftenagia was lovely as usual (although there are more sunbeds than two years ago when we last went, so you will certainly get to know your neighbours if you go later in the season ). It is possible to swim in May (just) I went in the sea three times, although the first time hardly counts as swimming as I just went in, hyperventilated for about 45 seconds and got out , although it was quite a bit warmer the second week. There weren't that many people there when we went, but again, there will probably be more people now . Enjoy ;D ;D

The sea was much better this last week, still a shock for the first 30 seconds but ok for swimming after that, there were several people snorkelling last week.
Ftenagia was lovely as always and the food even better now that Popi is cooking there.
We did'nt actually go to Pondomos but it looked good and we did not hear any negative comments.
Both beaches now have coin meters attached to the showers, 50 cents, these are govered and controlled by the town council, not the beach taverva owners! p.s. they don't actually work at the moment.

Hi Snoopy, not sure if there is a map but Halki is so small you certainly don't need one for the two main beaches Ftenagia and Pondamos, as you arrive in Halki you will see Ftenagia round the headland to the left of the hotel, shingle beach with sunbeds and a wonderful taverna, our home for our holiday every year !! Pondamos was a sandy beach but it has eroded after the bad winters so it appears that the sunbeds are now above the beach facing the sea, very good taverna there also, you reach Pondamos by taking the road up the hill by the bakery and then up past the school, good shop selling cold drinks toiletries and beach items on the way. Kania is further away and has developed in the last couple of years, you can walk but most people use the minibus from the village, it has a cantina and sunbeds, looks lovely but I haven't been there so cannot comment further. There are other beaches like Trachea but they need a boat to reach them. September is a very popular month so none of the beaches I mentioned will be very quiet, hope this is of some help.

Some more recent visitors to Halki might like to see how Ftengia looked 25 years ago. I found this when shuffling through some old boxed photographs. Attachments:

Some more recent visitors to Halki might like to see how Ftengia looked 25 years ago. I found this when shuffling through some old boxed photographs. What a great photo. As a first time visitor to Halki in 2013, who almost went in the early eighties but decided on Symi instead, this photo at least shows a little of what we missed. Great that we now have lots of extras to make life more comfortable but how lovely some landscapes are in their almost raw state. Thanks for sharing this sth.

I am in the process of sorting, scanning, filing about 10,000 photographs etc., which have been stored in boxes in the attic for years. It is a mammoth task and will take ages but, from time to time, I come across these little memories. I have dozens taken in Halki over very many years and should I come upon any more that may interest, I'll put them on.

Oh yes please sth would love to see any old photos. A few years back we did the Church Museum visit and I brought some great old black and white piccys of Halki.
Love looking at them and comparing them to piccys I have taken per the years.
