You may be missing the possibility of local family politics and ownership of the vessel. All may not be as it appears to the visiting Brit. If she is not operating as "one" would expect, then there will be a very sound (Halki/Greek) reason why. Aside from all that, I felt from the day she first appeared that she had been purchased without too much professional advice and always feared she would be something of a white elephant. Maybe I was right. On the other hand, maybe I was wrong and should keep my mouth shut and not express views on matters which don't concern me

I was, of course, being ironic previously.
You are totally right about the beneficiaries of the day tripper trade.
Chalkibert has telephoned me to remind me that Alimnia is, since WWII, a military base. If this were to be cancelled, hoards of people would be fighting over the real estate.
It is this fact, insurance problems, and the business unfriendly Greek government which stops commercial trips.
It does seem to be true that, outside of the excellent Halki Direct and Zifos travel, there is no middle way in Greece between total indolence and harassment!

sth - I think there is something in your musing about other possibilities - it rings a faint bell. As you rightly say, ultimately how someone does or does not use their assets is not our business.
Kinygos - my understanding is that the owner of Alimnia is in fact Halki's Council. They were rumoured to be looking to sell it but the lack of water on the island rather deterred the interested party/ies. That may be a spoof - per your ironic comment. I don't know.

Bizarre though it may be and ownership aside, it is still a designated naval base.
