Just wondered if anyone had ever visited 'out of season' or was contemplating it? I remember an article in the Halki Visitor several years ago describing an over-winter stay. Sounded rather bleak at times!

Jennifer I've always rather fancied it ..it does sound bleak but if you were stocked up with enough books and emergency Jaffa cakes I reckon you could survive it well enough

Like so many, we think Halki is idylic.... but in the winter ....... No place open to eat, not many people around to 'people watch', cold, wet'n'windy.............. ok, some loverly long walks to be had, but other than that, Halki holds little winter appeal........ Thats a 'no' from us then

Actually we really do fancy visiting Halki during the winter and have spoke with the locals about it many times. We are quite aware how different ir would be and of course we would have to be prepared for the weather turning. A couple of the tavernas the stay open so there would be somewhere to eat if we wanted to eat out. Our plan would simply be lots of books, long walks and catching up with the locals. Perhaps one year.

Well if you ever fancy it let me know, as I could make arrangements for you to stay in Mouthouria. Zifos travel also occasionally let houses to people out of season. There are usually 2 eating places open - Vasilis grill Mourangio and Tamazi and Kartouna's Avra (yes tartan tablecloths folks!) this year I think. Several bars stay open - Miriam at Musses, Lakis and Theodosia, some times Stekis too. It can be bleak, but it can be sunny and beautiful, and indeed conditions are good for walking without turning into a greasy spot! When it rains of course it tends to be torrential, with paths and steps turning into rivers and waterfalls. You need a good chum, fab books, great dvds or satellite tv to survive in a sane condition.....

Well PDA. I hope you have got some Euro's left over from a previous holiday because the rate has just plummetted to 1.1690. The way it's going it will only be a matter of time before it is 1 = 1.
I remember Gerry and Marion spending the winter on Halki a few years ago and they really didn't enjoy it. They were very cold because of the drafts and rain coming under the doors and through the windows. They were stuck on Halki for 17 day without any boats being able to come and go and then when they went to Rhodes, they got stuck there for a few days as well.

Lynn, Their experience that year was far from being unusual I'm afraid and not surprising they didn't repeat it.

Not too bothered about the weather, the averages show above 50f for Feb so got to be 20 degrees warmer than UK. Have been in early April for Easter a few times & that was ok. Anyway...the flights are booked now so no going back. Plus my wife promises to huddle if it gets too cold ! Just need a wifi point now !
