Sadly now DD is older and we are faced with GCSEs we can't really do Halki in the May half-term and are looking for an alternative island with weekend transfers. We have seen some nice villas on Lefkada. Anyone been there? If so, what did you think?

Hi Jennifer Went to Lefkada many moons ago. Stayed at Nidri. really liked it there and said we would go back but in the meantime found Halki so as yet no return trip.
We went with Thompson's and stayed at some fab studios right on the sandy beach. The best Taverna in the resort was under the studio's but last time I looked they were no longer in the Thomson brochure.
Like Liz I have looked at the Villa Daglas and the hotel which is either in front or next to the Villa called Hotel Palm Tree.
You can walk in to the little town (well it was littl e when we went) and if my memory serves me well there is a lovely waterfront with lots of Tavernas to choose from.
You could back then do a good boat trip that went over to Meganissi lovely tiny unspoilt island across from Nidri and also around another island owned by the Onnassis family called Skorpios which was on route to Megannisi
You could also walk up in to the hills behind Nidri where a fab waterfall starts and swim in the ice cold water.
Hope that helps

Having seen Mama Mia twice, I really like the look of Alonissos, mind you I like the look of Colin Firth even more

Talking of nice Greek islands. Did anyone read about the 35 year old "nutcase" on Santorini who cut his girlfriends head off and paraded it round the streets. Confronted by the police he threw the head into the police car and stole a jeep and took off only to run into a scooter with 2 female doctors on board, badly injuring both of them and then the police caught up with him and shot him.
Yep, stuff happens everywhere!

Thanks for the info on Lefkada, Daisy! Talking of Colin Firth (well makes a change from LC or TC for that matter ), my DD pronounced herself very puzzled during Bridget Jones diary because she couldn't understand why anyone would fancy Colin Firth or Hugh Grant because they were so OLD Last time I watch a film with her

Must admit that I thought MM was filmed on Skopelos, no matter, still looked great. Whilst not an island, we have always liked the Pelopenese, in Sept, quiet and rugged (no comparisons please). Once we drove through Kalamata to Sparta on roads akin to Austria/Germany for mountain scenery and drops ! With Laskarina we went to Leros - we enjoyed very much, Alonissos occupied our silver wedding but this Weds at 8pm on BBC 2 Franceso da Mosta, the chap with all the teeth and hair is doing a cruise and going to Crete, Leros and somewhere else in Greece I forget, definitely worth a look. Kefalonia was a good holiday several years back pre Correlli and also Ithaca and Sithia on the far east of Crete was also very enjoyable. By way of non name dropping, when in Ireland on a Conference, a few years back, I ws based in a truly delightful guest house and stayed in the James Bond Room where Pearce Brosnan slept, needless to say lots of questions on return to Blighty. PS All this apart we love Halki ! Rod

Mama Mia was definitely filmed on Skoplelos, we had friends there whilst it was actually being filmed. Alonnisos is very nice though not a patch on Halki. We were actually looking at Lefkada for this June though never made it! Still only 4 weeks until Halki now.

Well just loved Mama Mia. Thought the scenery was fab and the island was beautiful. What a feel good movie.
