I agree with Carol and Daisy - Mamma Mia is a fab film, I've seen it 3 times! Pierce Brosnan could sing to me any time! With regards to other islands, Halki is the only small Greek island I've been to, before Halki I went to Corfu and Crete but when I found Halki I fell in love with the place and haven't been anywhere else since apart from Bulgaria - for 2 weeks every day i thought "I wish I'd gone to Halki!"

We've visited Lefkas briefly - during a transfer to Meganissi (which we loved). We spent a few hours in Nidri and weren't all that impressed. It reminded me of a Wild West town, all Main Street and not much else. Compared to the peace and quiet of Meganissi it was quite noisy and busy. The beach didn't look too appealing either. Mind you, there was no sign of Colin Firth!

Morgana. We spent 3 weeks on Meganissi and became embroiled in a family feud by having the audacity to eat in the (quieter) taverna down at the jetty that we preferred, and not the one that everyone else went in. The owner (who was the brother of the owner of the other one), came storming over one day when we were having a drink (in his taverna) demanding to know why we never came in for a meal . Very picturesque island - but very strange (oh, and it pee'd down in August for a week )

I stayed at the Hotel Palm Trees in Nidri on Lefkas about 15 years ago. Nice hotel, with a nice beach as I recall, but I didn't like the amount of traffic on the road you had to walk down to reach the harbour with all the tavernas. It felt like you were taking your life in your hands every night.
Where I really do enjoy, and we go to as an alternative to Halki is Parga. You fly into Preveza which is the same airport they use for Lefkas. It's on the mainland rather than being an island but has a real 'island' feel to the place. It has a lovely harbour which they close off at night to traffic. Lots of the streets are very steep with steps, so again no traffic but you need to be fit. You can walk up to the castle at the top of the hill, then down to a lovely shingle beach at Valtos. Or there are 2 smaller beaches in Parga itself.
We stayed at the Altina Studios with Direct Greece the last time we went, would definitely try to book that accommodation when we visit again, as I'm sure we will. We'd have gone to Parga next September if we couldn't get sorted with Halki.

Just looking through the Manos brochure. Has anyone been to Meganissi, the little island close to Lefkas?

Just looking through the Manos brochure. Has anyone been to Meganissi, the little island close to Lefkas? Lisa, we went about 6 to 7 years ago (with Manos) and stayed in Spartohori - I think that's how you spell it ). It's a very strange place and a hell of a hike up from the harbour, where you get dropped off, and beach. If you have the slightest difficulty with walking up hills, I'd give it a miss - it's about a 1:5 hill for 20 minutes . When we went, there were two tavernas in the village, two down at the harbour and one on the beach, although I don't think it opens at night. If all you want to do is go for a meal at about 8pm and retire immediately to bed you might enjoy Spartohori, otherwise you are probably better considering the other bit (I think it's called Vathy - we went during the day and it was shut but it might be better in the evening). The tavernas where we stayed tended to close at about 10pm and the only other option for a drink was the kafenion, although you couldn't sit outside as the people living opposite objected to the "noise" - we were hardly being raucous, just talking . Apart from a couple of people we got talking to, I would rate the inhabitants of Meganissi (or Spartohori at least) as quite possibly the most miserable sods I have ever come across. It's probably ok for a day trip, but staying there (we stayed for three weeks) was a bit like having a starring role in Village of the Damned I could go on forever, but ........
