Dear All, I have to' leave Halki the 17th of Aug (wed) to be on time at Rhodes airport at 7pm. Could you please help me with ferry/water taxi/caique timetable? As far as I know, there is a connection to KS at 3.30 pm, do you think it ok to arrive at the airport on time? Thank you. Banda

Hi Banda
That timing should be fine for a 7pm flight, is that the local ferry that is going at 3.30pm ? If so just make sure you check the timings on the day, times can alter sometimes due to weather conditions etc.

You seem to be concerned about this matter. Yet you leave vital facts out.
Are you travelling independantly? How are you intending to get from Kamiros Skala to Diagoras airport? Have you checked in online? Why are you leaving it late to leave when there are earlier ferries? Have you arranged for the wind not to go over 6 on that day?
If you are concerned, cut some slack into your system, even to the point of leaving a day early if The Meltemi gets frisky!
My advice for independant travellers?
When leaving Halki never cut things fine on the timing.
Always have a plan B.

Leave on the Wed morning at least. To wait until the afternoon is a recipe for disaster It might work but most likely it won't.

Hi Nandas personally I would leave early ...I know it means alot of hanging around but to me a 3.30 leave from Halki is cutting it fine ( even by my standards lol ; ...5 minutes to take off from Rome ) ) the water taxi , I believe doesn't leave till 6 so that would be way too late -I'd go in the morning and hang about

Safer to get one of the two boats across first thing in the morning (they've been sailing at 8.30am recently), or the scheduled water taxi at 8.00am.

We had a 930pm flight on July 9th. We left on the water taxi at 6pm after having pre-booked a taxi to meet us at KS. Arrived at the airport slightly after 7pm.

I worry far too much I would be thinking what if the boat broke down half way across, and if we do get across what if the taxi isn't there, and if it is, what if it gets a puncture on the way .... and so on. Believe me. I will think of every possibility, magnify it ten fold and then worry about it ...... I need to drink more

I would want to spend every last second in Halki and go across in the afternoon, having checked boat times first of course

So, there you have it, Nandas - in summary, you've been advised to leave either the day before, or at 8am on Wednesday, or at 6pm! No doubt you will make a decision taking into account the weather forecast (certainly worth checking the day before), your level of confidence in arrangements, the scope of your travel insurance etc. I usually try to check boat times with 2 or 3 different sources; if 3 sources all say the same thing, I reckon it should happen. Di's worries are understandable, and I share some of them, but they can be countered by having a Plan B and a Plan C. Thus if the taxi doesn't turn up, you could phone for one (ask at the taverna at Kamira Skala); if the taxi gets a puncture or breaks down (and surely that must be a very rare occurrence?), the driver could radio for a back-up.
Incidentally, most standard travel insurance policies cover missed flights due to failure of scheduled public transport to get passengers to an airport, but exclude, for example, cancellation of a scheduled ferry where cancellation is ordered by a port authority because of bad weather. You have to delve into the small print to find this.

I checked ours last year when we went to Tilos as I wanted to know what would happen if the morning ferry was cancelled or delayed (or sank or was re-routed via Athens - only joking ) and we missed our flight. I was advised that we wouldn't be covered for the missed flights and that you needed a policy with "end user" insurance - or something like that. Anyway, we wouldn't have been covered.

Lol it's a wonder any of us get there at this rate ! When Nanda said 7 I assumed the flight was at 7 , if it's 9.30 then I'd do what sheilaporter did , water taxi and taxi to the airport ( Di .. I can hear you gasping for breath ) and this is exactly the scenario in favour of speedy boarding
