Hello I was under the impression the rate Stuart paid is indeed the 'charter' rate for the taxi boat.
Hello, Stuart... I don't think we've met, but good luck for July! It does seem as though the hassle will be worth it, and the Halki welcome was there, as ever! (even if the weather wasn't...).

If it is then it is extortionate I can see that if there were more of you it would make it more acceptable but even so that :ois a lot of money

Just out of interest then How many does the water taxi hold ?? So if you call it out it's 320e but if you get on it when it's doing a 'run' it's 12e even if there's only 1 of you ? How often does it do routine runs ?

Hi Liz I've never used the taxi boat, so can't provide a definitive answer to your questions. I just happen to know there is a 'charter' rate and then there's the rate when you take a more 'scheduled' service.

The water Taxi is a law unto itself. I assure you all that I would be the last person to justify overcharging, BUT... This boat goes at certain times which are specified and charges €12.50 per person. There may be any number of people on the trip and, on the other side a similar number to go in the reverse direction. If the sea is "lumpy" fuel usage will be greater.
If he is called out for a return trip with only one person the fuel usage is the same and there will be no people paying other than the person chartering.
Diesel is around €1.45 per litre.
The boat has a semi displacement hull and is not the most fuel efficient, but the most flexible.
I know how much more fuel a boat uses compared to a car.
The fee charged was not as extortionate as perhaps some of you think.
Still expensive though!
Perhaps waiting for the ferry would have been a better plan?

Unfortunately in this instance Stuart could not wait for the ferry leaving at 2.30pm as he had urgent paperwork to get checked and had to leave the island again the next morning for home. But I doubt many of us will be using the water taxi somehow unless we are really desperate

Glad you got there and back ok Stuart albeit a bit expensive! At least you had some time there and managed to catch up with some folk :-)
I start my journey from Stirling just after 7pm tomorrow to get to Manchester for my flight on Wednesday morning - fingers crossed for no delays.

am I reading this correctly, water taxi 230 euros one way AND 12.50 euros return? there must have been at least 18 people on the return OR good old taxi driver is pulling a fast one, Im going to ask him the price while Im there, watch this space.

am I reading this correctly, water taxi 230 euros one way AND 12.50 euros return? there must have been at least 18 people on the return OR good old taxi driver is pulling a fast one, Im going to ask him the price while Im there, watch this space. To clarify: The one way fare is €12:50 on a sheduled trip. So say 10 people out, 10 people back €12.50 X 10 X 2 = €250. Stuart's unsheduled or chartered trip 0 people out 1 person back €230. Stuart's sheduled trip 1 person out and you say 18 back €12.50 + €12.50 X 18 (or €12.50 X 19) = €237.50. Fuel costs for all the above would be roughly similar; a little bit more for a heavier load at full cruising speed due to the design of the boat hull. Again I am not justifying, just explaining. Let us not forget the little problem a while back with the prices charged by two main ferries!
