As 2010 is GCSE year we can't swing our usual May pilgrimage to Halki However, we are toying with Crete in early April. Has anyone been then and if so what is the weather like? Any recommendations re. best areas to stay would also be appreciated! Thanks

we're in the same boat Jennifer we've never been in April but have been a couple of times ..we've stayed in Plakias on the south coast (as you look at a map of Crete ) was a very quiet fishing village when we stayed with a fantastic beach ..bit of a transfer though from Heraklion but worth it We've stayed in Stalis which was quiet when we stayed but on a subsequent drive through seems to have merged with Malia ..and we've stayed in a place called Havania which was just outside Aghios Nicolas ..overlooking Mirabello bay ..absolutley beautifull !! a handfull of Tavernas and a few shops ..there is a ''village type complex here too with a flashing clock tower which for some reason my OH found very amusing ;D )It's near to Elounda and generally handy for everything ...there is a great waterpark near Heraklion . We've been looking at Crete again and thinking of staying up near Chania

We stayed at The White Houses, Makrigialos, Crete on the south coast second half of April. It was pleasantly warm by day, but chilly at night. Fortunately the accommodation is equipped with very efficient air con so we were kept warm. The apartments are on the harbour and 8 paces from the sandy beach. Not cheap, but well worth the journey from Heraklion. The very helpful agent Nikos also arranged our transport. Whether you consider them or not, do have a look on the website.

Thanks for the info. I think we might postpone trying Crete until 2011 when Easter is later. We are now thinking Tuscany at the end of August Life's so much easier just going back to Halki every year! ;D

Jennifer, Not sure if I'm missing something here (highly likely) but why don't you just go to Halki at the end of August
