Just found out there is an airline called Aegean Air which flies out of Stansted and flies to Rhodes via Athens. It's cheap - especially if you want a stop over in Athens, which is something we have never done.

We have flown Aegean on domestic routes, Rhodes to Athens, Santorini to Athens etc, they are very good. Modern aircraft, comfortable seats and pleasant staff. The route from Stanstead would be a good alternative to Easyjet from Gatwick if it is at the right time of day. If you want to go on to Halki by ferry, you need to land in Athens before 15.00 hrs if you do not want an overnight stay. Lane Line ferries leave Piraeus on Monday & Friday at 18.00 hrs.
