We returned 2 weeks ago and I'm not deliberately holding out but there's not much to tell really. The new season changes were reported well earlier on and there doesn't seem to be anything much else to tell you about. Rather reassuring really. Oh yes - day trippers! We're daily Ftenagia types so watched the boats arriving each day but thankfully only a few managed to find their way to Ftenagia so it really wasn't a problem. Can't comment on Pondamos as we never went this time. We were going to go along to the hotel one evening for a drink and a nose around, but never quite made it. I know it seems stupid but we never seemed to have time, and we were only there for three weeks!!! We'd never been in July before (we're usually May/June and Sept/Oct) and had expected it to be much busier so we were pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn't so bad. But a bit worrying for the local's businesses I think. We did notice that there were a lot of other nationalities (German, Swiss, French, Scandinavian) that we had not encountered before, but don't know whether that's usual in July or not. It was nice to have a greater mix and because it wasn't our usual time in Halki we got to know a whole new group of people which was lovely. You know who you all are so "Thanks for the company, it was good to get to know you"! Plusses for us were the longer and warmer evenings, and the sea was just wonderful for swimming - much warmer than earlier in the year. Also there were no cloudy or rainy days. We did spot a small cloud on day 17 I think it was. It was generally just a bit too hot for us though, in the late 30's most days, sometimes 40 and on a couple of days 42. Harry had a bit of heatstroke the last couple of days and had we not been going home I think he would have seen the doctor. We had also never experienced a meltemi which raged for 5 days. We were told by locals that it normally only lasts for 2 days at most and was most unusual for the time of year (yeah, I know, they always say that about any weather) and by day 4 everyone was fed up with it. (It didn't do much for my white bikini either!) No brollies on the beach so it was difficult to find any shade, and you could hear ashtrays & glasses smashing in the tavernas each evening as the massive gusts of wind swept everything off the tables. If you were able to open your eyes (not advised) you would see people all round the harbour hanging onto their food/drink/skirt/children. ;D ;D We wouldn't choose to go in July again, but if it was a question of go in July or don't go at all, guess what ......... ;D ;D

Yesterday 05/08/09 in the evening we had a cool breeze; very welcome. It showed up how humid the day had been by producing a fog which moved from south to north slowly obscuring Rhodes and the small island. A bank of fog also came rolling down over the windmills hiding them for a few minutes. Looked like the setting for a horror film. Then it was gone! Unfortunately my 2001 Sony digital cannot do low light without insisting on flash, so I could not capture it, but for a few moments it was interesting, then back to normal. It does seem to be getting more humid here as the years pass, but perhaps I just notice it more with increasing age!
