Do people find that the ATM is reasonably reliable? ie. any ATM can break down or run out, but is it fixed, say within a couple of days (given that people and things have to come from Rhodes)?

We used it for the first time while we were there this time and apart from it being a bit slow at times we didn't have any problems or hear of anyone who did. ;D ;D ;D

I have been using it for years, more often than not it is ok, but if it runs out, it may not be working for 2 or 3 days. So i suggest that you take some cash, sterling or euros as back up.

Yes, same as Howard, if it runs out it could be a couple of days before being filled particularly over a weekend but generally loads better than it used to be, just make sure to have a bit of spare cash ;D

Checking account Liz.
We have used the ATM for years without any problem until this May when at the beginning of our second week funds got low and we tried the machine only to be told that we were unable to withdraw. We contacted out bank who assured us that there was no problem with the cards and to use another machine! So we had a day trip to Tilos only to be given the same message by the machine there. Thankfully both machines let us use credit card so we could eat again. The charges were not too bad as we paid the credit card people immediately on return to the UK. Apparently there was some problem with the Maestro cards and the Dodekanese bank. Needless to say emergency funds will be taken in the future. ;D

Yes Kathy you can definitely change travellers cheques at Zifos travel, that is our normal way of getting money changed the ATM is an emergency measure when funds start to run low

The ATM has always been reliable for us, but would certainly advise having a back-up, just in case!

While on Halki, CASH is king - taking travellers cheques is just 'another' thing to look after and the whole point of us going to Halki is to have 2 weeks of carefree eatin', drinkin', swimmin' and sleepin'.
Take cash and punish the banks by not using their ATM....
//political rant over//.

The ATM on Halki had it's share of settling in problems but generally speaking, it works very well and the support system is fine, given the travel problems sometimes encountered. To be honest, the ATM at my local Sainsburys has shown a far higher rate of failure than the Halki one. Anyone travelling to any island who puts 100% reliance on a single machine for their holiday monetary supply, does not get my sympathy if they run out of cash. There are many alternatives. That poor maligned machine is no longer a new feature and I feel enough has been written about it. Newcomers to the boardand first time visitors to Halki have only to take a few minutes to read back. Fed up reading about ATM ;D ;D

Well soREE! In an ideal world, you are right about taking plenty of money. But I get paid mid holiday so I won't have it all to take with me!
