There is the risk that this posting will be self-defeating so, please, I wish no offence to anybody. The English language contains a plethora of words and sundry grammatical devices, and in the written form, these have worked well from Chaucer, through Shakespeare, et al. to the present day. On notice boards, things are sometimes written, and read, in haste and the meaning is lost. Those who read too quickly can misunderstand the use of irony, hyperbole, litotes, metaphor, synecdoche etc. In addition, people will write things on a board that they would not say directly in normal conversation. The medium is the written word; paradoxically people write the spoken word; the visual clues are missing and the device used to correct this is the “emoticon”. Others try to communicate using the purely written word eschewing these abominations; by writing this, I can be accused of elitism. My problem with them is that I am not sure what they mean, and prefer accurate English; I hope I use it! So I make a plea. Please take time to read what you write and check if the meaning is clear, and conversely read carefully, and do not jump to the conclusion that someone is being gratuitously offensive; to do so will certainly be erroneous. If you think someone has obfuscated his or her meaning, you could ask politely for clarification; this is, above all, a communication between friends who visit Halki.

Lordy Simon ...you swallowed a dictionary ?? but seriously you are right ...we've done well so far not many misunderstandings ..but the odd hiccup is to be expected ..in my experience the quicker they are sorted the better for everyone concerned
