There are those among you that want to get me talking about the size of my tackle, how I spread the skirts, trolling round the islands, etc.; but I have moved on from “Carry On” innuendo and pun. Plus the ones who took the bait last time (oops) have either caught on (oh dear), or are not using this site.
I have not been fishing this year yet, but made a trip to Tilos on Thursday and was surprised how different from Halki it is; it was my first visit.
Regarding fish per trip. My winter sun visit to the land of OZ also took me to Efate island; Vanuatu. The boat just averaged just over one fish per 8 hour trip with two skunks out of the five trips, but I got my first two Blue Marlin (150 & 90Kg) tagged and released. It was between seasons. In Halki, in season, I do as well, or better, but not as big!
Is sport fishing cost effective? Compared with buying fish, no. Compared with paying to attend your chosen wendyball team match each week of the season I would say “yes!”.

Haven't been to Tilos for a long time - went there the first year Laskarina did it, so that was a long time ago. I gather it's changed a bit, but it's still wonderful. A great island for walking - better than Halki for this. But Halki wins on the picturesque harbour front.

You can read about Tilos in various tourist books, but they don’t say much, apart from the dwarf elephants, or mammoths!
I will deal with my personal impressions, which were brief, and good.
The first thing is that the length of the island is north – south, whereas Halki is east -west. The main village of Halki faces south-east while that of Tilos (Livadhia) faces north-east. The prevailing wind is north, so Halki is protected rather better than Tilos. Also the passage to Halki is mostly protected (Makri, Alimnia) whereas that to Tilos is not. We headed north; the sea was 3 – 4 with the wind in our faces. This was welcome because it was a seriously hot day. I kept the speed down because we were slamming a little into the waves. The bay of Livadia appeared to the west and the village grows before your eyes round to the left. The buildings lack the pink appearance of Halki because tiled roofs are not so much in evidence. We moored at the jetty at one end of the bay, and walked along to a restaurant that was setting up for the evening meals. From a large upright fridge, whole animals on spits were being set up on a grill; like the Omonia of old. The bay is flatter and everything is more spread out than Halki without the central focus of the harbour.
The bad news was that the wind was getting up and we had decided to return after the excellent light lunch. There is much to see in depth as well as width without the steep Halki hillside, but I didn't get to see it! Coming back we surfed the waves with the wind, so minimal slamming, but it was hotter!
With my own boat, I can come & go as suits me, and the weather, but it would be a bit brutal on a ferry, with a schedule, bashing into a moderate Meltemi. I was warned that the passage was nasty by the Halki people and I can see it could be. I did it in an hour and a half, and returned in an hour. The Nissos Halki, standing in for the cat, took at least two hours; it followed us.
I will go again when I have a crew, and time to stay a bit. That lamb on the spit looked good! I am not sure I would be happy saying I am going on this day, and this time months in advance, because the sea state might be up to 6 and two hours of that full on would not be fun. Thankfully, I have a freedom with my boat to be flexible. I have heard reports of green faces on the Tilos ferry; seasickness is not funny. A cat is supposed to take a head-on sea better than a mono-hull; I have no experience of this!

I did the Tilos trip weekly with Laskarina. My feeling is and was that the long time spent on the boat outweighed the pleasures of Tilos! Could be because I went weekly, but as an island it didnt float my boat, and I was always happy when Halki appeared on the horizon! I never tired of Alimnia though!

I know that a miserable boat trip colours the opinion, but what exactly is wrong with Tilos? Perhaps it is just not Halki with the familiar faces, or no focus for the bay with the harbour up one end. Do tell. I will still go again to find out for myself!
