what is the cost effective way to the port by taxi. is it bartering with the taxi driver, using the meter which the locals use or is there any other way.
a friend has just arrived back home after spending 21 days on Halki. they tell me they bartered with the 5 drivers at the airport and the cheapest price for 2 65euro's one way.. when he was due back at the airport the taxi ride cost 60euro's. what's going on. doe's any one have any ideas what it should cost..

For Kamiros Skala, to or from the airport, ALWAYS agree the price with the driver before you get in the taxi unless he is well known to you. Even then, from bitter experience, it is best to check! If you get taken to the cleaners, it will almost certainly be your own fault. The fares from Rhodes Town to KS are fixed and displayed.

Where possible when using a taxi from KS to the airport it is best to have someone on Halki "fix" it for you beforehand and agree the price. You will then not find yourself stuck on the jetty at KS and at the mercy of a driver who knows you "must" get to the airport.

In Rhodes Town at the main taxi rank on a board about six feet square. Also positioned at other town taxi ranks. These boards contain legally agreed fares and all drivers have copies.

65 Euros is extortionate! I've never heard of so much being charged.
As well as in the town, the fares are also displayed at the airport taxi rank, and Kamiros Skala is clearly listed so you should be sure to pay only the price as displayed. We always confirm the 'list' price with the driver before we get in the car. I don't know what it is now but it used to be around 30 Euros I think.
Coming back (Kamiros to airport) can be a different price and we've had to pay 40 Euros or more sometimes. So Sths advice to get someone on Halki to book the taxi and fix the price for you is wise. Or book it with the driver as you go out, and get him to give you the price, then confirm perhaps the day before by phone. However, even doing that we've been charged more. "My partner got the price wrong" Yeah, OK!

From airport is fixed price plus tip, depending on how many cars overtaken on blind bends etc. From port to airport is more because the taxi has usualy come from rhodes town not the airport & has travelled twice as far to get you. Having said that 65 seems steep I have never paid over 50 but I always organise it on Halki before & try to get a driver I know.

Macca - We can only go off what we paid last year from the airport to the port which was 28 euros. On the return we got our landlord to arrange a taxi from the port to the airport but it was 60 euros because he had to come from Rhodes town to pick us up and back to the airport. This year we will pre booking our return before we go across to Halki. Hope this is of some use to you, and is pretty well in line with Amandas advice.

Note the airport surcharge and the charge for an "appointment".

There is little logic in the taxi fares. I get charged as much to go to the airport 5 - 8 mins as I do when I want to got to Town for a drinkie 20 - 30 mins. Kamiros Skala is NOT a popular destination with taxi drivers; long distance and no chance of a return fare. The fares quoted are no surprise to me, although I have not done the trip by taxi recently. Of course, if you get lucky you might meet someone who lives near the airport, has a car, and is travelling when you are. Anyhow, please don't be unkind to the taxi drivers, a lot of them won't do the trip at all.

Hi Kinygos You may be best placed for advice I need! There are 5 of us,including 3 teenagers. Are we better getting a minibus than two taxis from the airport to Kamiros Skala, and if so, are we likely to pick one up at the airport, or will we need to book in advance? For our second week we need to get to Pefkos, are we better going direct by taxi/ minibus from Kamiros Skala, or going to Rhodes Town by taxis/ minibus then picking up a bus?Any help would be greatly appreciated! ;D

Amanda & Harry - We are going on Wed 20th May for 4 weeks which is a month of my Crown Green Bowling season. After I have made a good start to the season 'er indoors' (Joan) is still insisting she is going for 4 weeks but I can stay at home if I like. Hope to see you both there if you are going soon.
