We went to Symi from Halki a couple of years ago. At that time yo had to get a boat from Rhodes Town. Took about 5 or 6 hours to get there. Symi was a gigantic disapointment for me - it's like a horrible vision of what Halki could become. It's bigger, over-run by day trippers (Italians a the rudest people on the planet - not the Germans), very expensive, totally comercialised. On the positive side - Horio (up the hill from the main town was brilliant - a bit run down, but really good - some nice wee shops, bars, tavernas and great views. BUT we were pretty glad to get back to Halki - later the following day. Like coming home.

Hi Liz, Uncertainty only as to this year's schedules. An element of doubt on the Halki~Symi link. I know what used to be but I have doubts as to the now, if you know what I mean. And, not being certain and not ever wanting to go to Symi, I simply frowned. ;D
Stuart, I absolutely could not agree with you more. I cannot even bring myself to look at the Symi Visitor. To me,and I stress -to me - It exhibits the very worst that mass tourism can do to something wonderful. And wonderful it certainly used to be.

With you on that one sth. If you really must go to Symi then it has to be via Rhodes. You can however get to Tilos and Nisiros with some hope of getting back the same day. For a guide to the catemaran timetable the site is www.12ne.gr/en/Much better than Symi.............

The first time we went to Halki we did it as a twin centre with Symi. We went to Halki first and loved it. We had to go back to Rhodes to get the catamaran to Symi. I have to say after the tranquilness of Halki, Symi was a real shock. It had elements of Agios Nicholios on Crete. It may have been a bit better if we had done Symi first and then Halki but even so we are not in a rush to go back to Symi.

Symi obviously is what suits a lot of people otherwise there wouldn't be upteen hundreds of ex.pats hanging out there.

I must admit it doesn't appeal to me ...I read the Symigreece.com site most days ..love the photos and the blogs but I know its just too busy for me ( all this said from a woman who is going on a cruise with about half a million others )

Don't tell any of them about a certain Greek Island. They might all turn up at Ftengia next year
