There are many brands of Retsina but you are most likely to get CAIR on Halki and those of us who drink it regularly feel it is the best. Many locals do as well. Actually, many Greeks wouldn't touch the stuff! It has an element of pine resin and hence the name. Usually it takes a little getting used to and the first taste may be a bit like aviation spirit. Persevere, you will doubtless become addicted like the rest of us.

Hi Sunfun,You have to try ouzo, not the Greek way with water, but with lots of fresh orange and ice, its stunningly delicious - but be careful.....its so easy to drink, it can catch you unawares when you try to walk in a straight line afterwards! ;D

Sunfun. Retsina - love the stuff ;D ;D. It is very very dry and you will either love it or hate it (a bit like Marmite). Over here, you can usually only get Kourtaki (in Tesco) or occasionally Tsantali, both of which are quite "tame" to some of the ones you get in Greece which tend to be quite "resiny" (Giorgiadis is one of my favourites) ;D ;D. I personally prefer the ones you get in Greece, (most of them come in clear Newcastle Brown shaped bottles with a flip top on them). Its the only drink that really compliments Greek food. Tends to vary from pale yellow to mid yellow, depending on how much resin is in it. Word of warning tho'... if it looks quite dark (a bit like a urine sample - sorry folks, only way to describe it) don't touch it

Thanks for the tips folks :)I have tried ouzo before but wasn't too keen, but will certainly give it a go with the orange and ice ;)Kathy,i'll try to walk straight, but i make no promises ;D Di,is kourtaki not a sweet dessert wine?Does it have on the label.mavrodaphne of patras alongside kourtaki?I have had this from tesco and asda and think it is lovely, but it is very sweet,so i don't think it's retsina.I'll remember to try the cair retsina, cheers all!

Sunfun. Kourtaki is one of the companies that makes it ( like Lindemanns, or Banrock Station etc). I can assure you that it's nothing like Mavrodaphne (which I also like). Retsina (affectionately referred to by me and the hubby as "ratty") is a very dry white. Get a bottle from Tesco and give it a go ;D ;D Best served ice cold.
