I have to say I have never yet been bitten but I know others have, I really dont think they are such a problem on Halki as other greener islands but I would still take a plug in thingy for the apartment and maybe something to spray yourself with in the evenings just in case. ;D

The mozzies don't get to the castle but unfortunately do get most other places. Take some anti mozzie stuff and don't forget to put on the first night when still in a daze after the travelling. Thats usualy when I get savaged.

There aren't as many as on other islands, but they will appear a few days after any showers. We have stayed in several different villas and always use the plug-in repellent which seems to work. My wife tends to get bitten in the tavernas of an evening, but again it's quite rare.

Don't let anybody tell you there are no mosquitos on Halki. Believe me, they are there just as they are on other islands. They are real and I have witnessed some people in a mess with them. Take whatever precautions you can and if you are lucky, as I am, and they don't fancy you, you've lost nothing. Should you get over to Alimnia they are the size of Boeing 737's and have a very nasty nip. ;D

Thanks for the replies folks :)Thought it was too good to be true! We'll stick to the B1 tablets 2weeks before and during our holiday, they usually work, but also a plug and mosquito wipes too. Better safe than sorry P.S. Andrew...bitten in the tavernas That sounds painful! ;D

I never was bitten till I stopped smoking then they seemed to take a fancy to non nicotine flavoured blood. Someone suggested Vit B but it had a very peculiar effect on me and none with the mozzies. Ditched vit b and stuck to jungle formula spray instead.

Many years ago, someone told me they didn't like Ouzo or Retsina. That could explain why I'm not troubled!

Ibiteard the ouzo thing before, I do get bitten, but not as badly as some people do, so maybe the ouzo helps......or could it just be if I drink enough of it I don't notice!!Even worse I think, are the house flies that bite, I don't think Ive come across them on Halki, but I have on other islands. They are vicious and truly evil. They wont even shoo away, just land and biteĀ

The locals at Symi suggested garlic as a deterrent, for mosquitos and other travellers for that matter. We make a Greek salad on our first day but add a mixture of chopped garlic and olive oil to it! Obviously it's washed down with retsina, supposedly another deterrent, which is probably the only wine which matches a bulb of raw garlic. The lady at the Russian restaurant a few years back served raw garlic in olive oil as a side dish on request and we rarely got bitten. The kids don't get bitten which may lead to the conclusion that it's the garlic which works!
