Lidl have got a Greek promotion on this week and they have lots of familiar goodies including 50cl bottles of retsina for £2.99, it looks like the Cair one that we drink in Halki but tastes ever so slightly sweeter to me but it is a good substitute, certainly an improvement on Kourtaki.

Possibly it may be too many years pickled in the stuff but, I really do not have a problem with Kourtaki. though I do admit Cair is lighter.

Hi sth, I always bring three 75cl bottles of Cair retsina home with me and try not to drink them too quickly as I know there will not be any more until the following year, but I admit sometimes I have to buy the Kourtaki, it is fine as a substitute. Not sure if the Lidl one is Cair but certainly very similar.

I don't remember seeing Cair anywhere else in Greece and certainly to date not in the UK. I only drink it in the summer in UK anyhow and then only infrequently.

CAIR is made on Rhodes. Must go to my local Lidl to see if they have it. I love retsina.

Visited the near Lidl today to see the Greek promotion. It was all the usual prepacked stuff. The retsina doesn't say CAIR on the label, but bought some anyway.

We're lucky in that we have a cash and carry type thingy run by a Greek who imports all his wines (metaxa, ouzo, feta, vine leaves - you name it he stocks it) etc to supply the Greek restaurants in Liverpool so we can buy retsina from him. Only problem is that you have to buy it by the case

I got some too , i've had that one before in Symi, I bought some goodies too,I also got a bottle of Anessia 7 star which looks like Matexa £11- 45. Not tried it so dont know what it tastes like but seeing that I have an awful cold seems like a good time to try it

Lidl stocked that dried bread that the Greeks seems so fond of. They also had tins of "musky octopus" which I imagine had lost something in translation. I came away with a tin of giant beans. Did you know that methane is 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide in terms of its contribution to global warming? Andrew x

That octupus has been around a long time and I think is great. It does need a little bit of tweaking and doctoring to bring out the best.
