There is a new website (in Germany) concerning the animal welfare society in Chalki. For more information click: www.tierhilfe-chalki.de You find nice fotos and stories about Halki-cats, some of them are now living in Germany. The website is in building up, we try to translate it in English and Greece. Maria

Thank you Maria, the photos are beautiful. Liz, I managed to translate quite a bit by using the Google translation tool in another window. Quite quick and surprisingly readable as very often it comes out as complete gobbledygook! Please do let us know when there's an English version Maria.

Have just installed the "translate this page" button on the Google Toolbar... brilliant, haven't laughed so much in ages ;D ;D although I did find the translation under a photo of two kittens as "Kitten without mother, suspended, lovingly" slightly alarming Joking apart, great website and I hope it gets lots of support

Thank you all, we hope to find a lot of people and Halki-lovers who support us and our ideas while staying in Halki, during their holidays and and at home in Europe. Let`s find a better life for the animals together with the people fron Halki and the tourists. It cannot be, that there are animals poisoned or shot.

Found your Website in Google and this website about halki. I visit halki since 4 years and I love the Island. Seeing every year some new buildings and more tourists. But I worry about the animals, especially cats and dogs. I heard about poisoned cats with kittens last summer, the kittens were found alone and in a bad condition. With the help of friends they survived. Later I heard about, that a cat was shot - in the middle of the day. But I`m afraid to come back to halki with my kids, I cannot explain them, that there are people doing this. Thanks for trying to find help for the halki-animals. Good luck. Ren.

Eechen, unfortunately the things you have heard are true. These things have always happened. However, if it is of any comfort to you and you understandably want to go back to Halki, these things do not USUALLY occur during the tourist season. Regretably. they do still take place at the very end of the season and in the winter. It is happening less every year thanks to the efforts of some very dedicated people. You really should not allow it to put you off visiting.

eechen, if I may say one more thing. The majority of Halki visitors/tourists know little or nothing about these matters. Go there as a visitor and enjoy your holiday with your family. If you set out to investigate the stories you hear about and to become involved, you will become upset. There is no necessity for you to have anything to do with that side of island village life, whether it be on Halki or elsewhere. Do go back and enjoy.

thank you, we still work on it - we found some people to support us - even chalki-friends. A lot of people found our website. We found a teacher from Greece who translated our sites in Greek, we`ll finish it soon. We know, it is not only a Halki problem, you can find this problems everywhere in Mediterranian Countries and islands. We find them everywhere in Europe.. but we don`t want say nothing, we don`t want to close our eyes. We like the mediterranien islands, we want to spend nice holidays there and having fun, but we like the animals too, they are a part of our nature and we want to respect them.
Does somebody heard good or bad news from the halki animals ? Some new stories ? On our website is a contact-e-mail-adress, to tell us.
