I hate being the bearer of bad news….. Yesterday evening I spoke with my dad on the phone, for those of you who don’t know it my dad is Nick from Ftenagia. Anyway, he told me that Alex, Christine’s’ husband – the one everybody calls “captain”, has passed away. The funeral took place yesterday in Chalki and my dad said it was a very nice funeral. The navy was also there to pay respects. Not that this is any consolation! May he rest in peace! I know that a lot of you knew him and were friends with him and Christine. It will be difficult, but hang one to the wonderful memories you must have of him and Chalki. Christine, all I can say is “hang on”!
Christina.

I know there are friends have made the trip to Halki for the funeral. I am sure they will pass on the good wishes of all. Also, I see that Christina is now a member of this forum and wil,l in time, I'm sure, read these notices. He will be sadly missed.

We have known Alex & Christine for over 20 years, so the news of his death is a hard blow. Alex was a very senior officer in the Greek Navy coming from a famous Halki family, the statue on the harbour is of Alex's uncle who was killed at the start of the second World War. Alex was a true gentleman loved and respected by both the Halki people and the many visitors he befriended over the years. Although his health had not been good for the last few years, he tackled the problems with great courage and was still wonderful company. Our sympathies go out to Christine, his family and his many friends all over the world. We will not see his like again.

Thank you all for your condolences. Alex and I missed Halki very much last year and his wish was to be buried there. I will be back in Halki in the Summer to thank everybody personally.
