Hi all We are Halki virgins and will be visiting for a week from August 29th this year. Staying at Villa Eleni down. Just wondered If we arrive on the day of the festival or do we miss it by a day? Can't seem to find any info on it online. We are very much looking forward to visiting, especially with our waterfront accomodation xxx

Hi Suzi welcome to the board. You will presumably arrive in the afternoon of the 29th so you will be there for all the music and dancing that will take place in the evening and through the night on the harbour. The festivities don’t usually end until approximately 6am and as you have a waterfront property I would suggest you bring earplugs if you want any sleep or just stay up and enjoy the experience. Whatever you choose to do I am sure you will enjoy it, we have been there many times for the festival over the years and it is very special. Many people arrive from Rhodes and other islands a few days before so they can take part in the ceremony that happens at the monastery on the 28th then on the morning of the 29th a brass band comes over from Rhodes, the icon is brought down from the monastery and is paraded along the harbour with the band playiing, following the the icon are the Pappas, dignitaries and locals, it is quite solemn and very moving, the icon is then taken to the church on the harbour. After all this I think most people have a rest before they dance the night away...enjoy.

Hi Carol. Thanks for your reply. We actually arrive in Rhodes on 25th August but we are staying in Lindos for 4 nights and then coming to Halki. I Was hoping we could get over there in the morning but it looks like only 1 ferry on Wednesdays? I will check nearer the time anyways. Really happy we won't miss the festival. Not sure we will last till 6am but we will give it a good shot! Really looking forward to visiting. Thanks again Suzi x

Fedon may do an earlier run from KS to Halki on Wednesday morning. There's a link on the board under Ferries I think, to their Facebook page which will give the best indication of whether you'll have to wait for the pm sailings or not.

Suzi, there could well be an earlier ferry that day but too early for times to be published yet, they are normally put on Facebook approx a month in advance but I would think you have got a pretty good chance of getting one earlier especially with the festival that day plus there could also be day trippers coming across, fingers crossed for you.

Suzi, you may know this already but just to add to what others have written in case it may help: be aware that on Wednesdays the "normal" scheduled weekday 1430 ferry from Kamira Skala to Halki operates differently from other days, to cater for Wednesday charter flights and in the past, two ferries have departed from KS at around 1600 and 1700, sometimes later if contracted to wait for flight arrivals on that day. But in late August the local ferries are highly likely to operate day trips, often arranged through hotels in Rhodes - if you want to get across in the morning using a day-trip ferry you would probably best try to check availability beforehand maybe via the Fedon facebook as others have suggested (these ferries have official limits on passenger numbers), or get to Kamira Skala by about 0930 if possible. I don't have personal experience of the festival time but I suspect that there will be more frequent ferries than usual to cater for all the comings and goings then.
I haven't been to Lindos since April/May 1972 (on a working visit to get a sailing dinghy ready for the summer season for the old Murison Small travel firm), but from what I gather about changes there, you may find Halki to be a generally quieter place except for festival time. Strewth, I've just worked out I'm referring to Lindos 46 years ago. I wonder if Laker Airways has stopped operating yet.

Hi Muriman Thanks, that is really useful info. I will check the Facebook page nearer the time. We are going to Lindos as we Got married there 5 years ago so visiting all that again. Will be nice to remenise. Especially as people aren't allowed to get married at St Paul's anymore. Will be interesting to see what they are putting in place to allow for that. Lindos can be very busy and we like a bit of bustle but not for too long so will be looking forward to the peace and quiet in Halki after the festival. Best of both worlds! X
