Olympic's accommodation info on their web site has reasonable images of the property and views there from. There are various threads on specific properties on this site which might help decide which one to go with.
The village is in an ark around the bay with the focal point of the main quay where all the ferries dock. The main beaches, Pondamos and Ftenagia are about 15 mins walk from most of the accommodation. Kania, the third beach is a 30-40 min walk depending on whether you use the road or go round the coast - or you can catch the small bus for a few Euros.
As for exploring the island, on foot is best with an early start to get to the old village and castle before the sun gets up too high. For the energetic early riser, there is the hike up to the monastery at the western end of the central high plateau, though the bus goes once a week with a half hour stop there.
There is a walking map of Halki (link in another part of the web site) which is rather good, similar in quality to our OS maps but on a more durable paper.

Hi Birani, also check out the many photos on this site, it will give you a feel for the island its beaches and tavernas. The tavernas are based around the harbour and everyone has their favourites, my best advice would be to try all of them and make your own decision, they are all very good, also each of the three main beaches have excellent tavernas which are definitely worth a try during the day.
