For those of us that don't do facebook I thought I would update our recent trip in Halki Visiting as I like to log into the site to see what is happening over in Halki. We travel with Olympic and this year we travelled on Saturday rather than the usual Wednesday. Our flight was at 8.00 a.m. so we expected to catch an early evening ferry over to Halki. Unfortunately, we had to stay overnight in rhodes as there is not an afternoon ferry departure on Saturday (heads up to anyone thinking of travelling on Saturday). I suppose this may change when the season is in full swing. Although disappointed it wasn't too bad when we told ourselves we had only really missed one evening meal as we arrived by 10 am the next day. The island is very quiet this year with very few people about and the restaurants must be struggling. Luckily, the second week is much better for them.
Stayed at Kiki's again. Had a look at Dorathia Maisonettes for future reference as they were on sale late for a very good price (just another accommodation option if we couldn't get what we wanted). The weather was a bit mixed this May with quite a lot of windy days, one day windy enough for the umberellas at Chania to be tied down with rope. One day of drizzle and a couple of thunderstorms during the night. The evenings were quite cool though this year - cardigan or fleece required - and some nights definitely sit within the plastic covers let down by the restaurants.
We didn't go too far this year - over the years we have found our favourite place and that is Chania. As perfect as ever - a gentle stroll over each morning admiring the views, lazy day reading on the beach for me, or chatting to the many friends we make each year, and a morning fishing for my husband. This year, after many barren years, and after a few lessons and advice last year from the fishermen that fish off the jetty at Chania, he had a very successful catch - and better still Poppi cooked them for us most days for lunch - Delicious! There's nothing nicer than eating the fruits of your own efforts (not mine actually - but his). After a hard day on the beach and a lovely lunch - we justified this by the walk back to Emboria. Garyfalia just could not understand why we wouldn't let her take us back in the truck - I guess Greek people are just not Ramblers and can't understand that we actually enjoy the walk.
Garyfalia and Panayotis are getting married this October.
So, for all of you still to make your visit to Halki this year, you will be pleased to know that very little has changed. There's now a sign pointing the way to Areta The recycling is going from strength to strength with new recycling points being delivered by the big ferry and positioned along the streets. A new restaurant has opened called Almyra - set up by Takis from Remezzo.
While I'm missing Halki already I know I have next year to look forward to.
