Here's a little observation test for those in Halki during the rest of September or October. When we were there in June, we found that the top rung of the steel ladder into the harbour which we used for swimming was missing, making it difficult in some circumstances to climb out of the water. With the kind assistance of Maria Zifos and a length of rope from her father's store of boat items (although he didn't know it at the time!), Christine made a plaited rope "step" and attached it in place of the missing rung. When we left, it was still there, and I have a feeling that it may remain for quite a time. I'm curious to know whether it is still there. I haven't said where the steps are - that's part of the observation test. I'm taking bets on whether the repair will last into next year. Of course, there's always the possibility that a complete new ladder has been installed, but somehow I doubt it.

I think I can now answer my own question - I've now seen a photo showing what appears to be a repair to the top step of the ladder, so the rope is no longer there. The ladder is next to the villa Alexandros, visible from the "lower path" route to or from the direction of the police station/hotel.
