I know this is probably the subject of a whole new thread but........ What is the attraction of retsina? I've never taken to it. Having said that, as regular readers will know, I'm quite partial to a drop of the (much tastier) red juice, so that might explain it. Each to their own but the last time I had a glass of the stuff it tasted how I would imagine battery acid would be like. Discuss if you would Cheers. Tom and Rose

Ah .. Lovely Retsina ....... I do think it is an acquired taste, and you have to have more than one glass to acquire that taste .. It has to be ice cold and is a lovely lighter alternative to wine at lunchtime.

It doesn't travel well - physically OK but it needs the background scents of Greece, the dry heat and as Liz says, it has to be kept and served v cold. Excellent lunchtime accompaniment to food, good long night cap sat looking over the harbour and reliable in quality. Some taverna house reds are very good, others a bit towards the battery acid end of the spectrum for my palette (heavy Aussie red).

Maybe that's where I've been going wrong. I can only remember having it cold rather than ice cold.....

I'm with you Tom, I tried it just the once a few years back and thought it was totally rank! That said it was as a late nightcap (I bought it on our way home) and it was the cheapest in the shop so perhaps I need to go upmarket a little bit and of course ensure it is ice cold, maybe even avoid trying it after copious amounts of the amber nectar beforehand? ...Any brand recommendations from the experts?

Cair. The local from Rhodes takes a lot of beating. Light and clean. The most readily available on Halki. However, there are many other excellent brands on the market. There are also some to be found which could have come from a Pathology lab.
A lot of people have taken years to acquire the taste. After a long absence the first glass may taste like Kerosene but then it all goes swimmingly. Top tip - forget the beer.
There is a certain person on this forum - not often posting - with whom I have had the pleasure many years ago of emptying untold numbers of Cair during and following very long lunchtime sessions under that tree outside Maria's Taverna. She will know I have written this as her ears will be scorchio!!

Brand? Yes the biggest, cheapest bottle in the store -that's the brand you want Seriously though Cair is good as is Kourtakis (which is the one you will generally find in the UK). But Steve is quite right - it doesn't really work in the UK. I'm drinking a glass of Italian Soave whilst looking at a murky English Channel -that works for me. Retsina requires: heat/balcony/harbour view/ciccadas/cockerels and all the other ambience you get on a Greek island. Mythos, on the other hand, translates very well especially on a warm Summers day. Sadly, my local Morrisons took it off their assortment last year and I have yet to find another supply locally (you can get it online from importers Adnams Brewery of Southwold).

Cair is the only one for me, yes it is an acquired taste but I acquired it many years ago definitely to be drunk ice cold and not mixed with anything like soda as one of my friends on here drinks it, can't wait for that first bottle when we arrive, so what if it is 10am !! Forget the Kourtaki that is readily available over here, it is a very poor relation of Cair.
