Jet2 have announced they will be flying out of Birmingham in 2017 and there will be two flights to Rhodes, Monday and Thursday afternoons from 1st May until 30th October, great news for independent travellers who live around that area as the Thomas Cook and Thomson monopoly at Birmingham has made the flights extremely expensive, hopefully this will be a cheaper option.

I have just looked at the Jet2 website and the flights are now available, I did a random 3 week booking for end of August to mid September and two flights plus 22kg luggage each worked out at £494 which is an awful lot less than their competitors.

That's very interesting to know for the future thanks Carol, Brum is our nearest airport. We've ended up having to fly out of Gatwick with Thomson for this years trip at an exorbitant price just to get the timings right etc.... The carriers know they have a captive market for those requiring onward ferries etc so any new competition is great news!! Used Jet2 out of East Mids numerous times previously though and although a budget carrier they are absolutely fine.

Thanks, Carol - As Andybf says, the info could be useful, even for those of us a bit further away in the Bristol-ish area, as Birmingham is about the same distance as Gatwick and Bristol-Rhodes flights have become rather infrequent and at inconvenient times. I've never used Jet2 and Monday and Thursday afternoons may not be ideally timed, but at least they seem to have a 10kg hand baggage allowance rather like EZYJ , which is more feasible than Thomson or Thomas Cook. I don't like queuing at airports, and for an 11-day trip in June we had difficulty getting within Thomson's measly 5kg allowance per person (and all in one bag, no extra small handbags!), though we did manage it by putting heavy items in deep-pocketed clothing. We need the likes of EZY, Ryanair or Jet2 to inject some competition into Bristol-Rhodes flights.

At least the Jet2 option gives us living in the south west another option and the prices are good even if the flight times aren't great. We are going from Cardiff again this year with similar flight times to Jet2 but as we are going for 3 weeks getting there on the same day as you fly isn't so important so we are having a night in Rhodes either end and hopefully using the Prevelis. My ideal though would be Easyjet or Jet2 from Cardiff or Bristol with early flights.

We've flown to Rhodes twice with Jet2, once independently and once with Olympic and they were brilliant! I would rate them much higher than Easyjet and Ryanair. The staff at the UK airports (we've flown from Leeds Bradford and East Midlands) are very good - lots of people in red fleeces directing you around. The first time we flew with them we got the giggles as it was a bit Yorkshire Airways (for those of you that remember Hale and Pace's sketch-buckle up and shurrup) as all the recorded announcements were really exaggerated Yorkshire accents - I can say that cos I'm from Yorkshire! Living in South Sheffield, Birmingham is also a great airport for us - much easier to get to than Leeds Bradford. Really pleased with the addition!

We have booked now for 2017 with Jet2 from Birmingham as the flights from Cardiff were going to cost almost £1000, Jet2 came in at £584 with luggage and seats, also flying on Monday from Rhodes will hopefully avoid the utter chaos that we have encountered for the past two years at Rhodes airport on Wednesday evenings.
