We are coming in September, visiting for the first time in a few years. Somebody told me they have been doing some renovation work up at the castle, is that right? And no more water boats?

Hi Johnr, no Halki no longer needs a water boat as there is a desalination plant on the island that supplies all the water, it is safe to drink so we no longer have to buy bottled water. Liz, I don't know why I never thought of Retsina ice cubes....genius

Monday and Halki's brand new dust cart gets first outing. Gone is the old and battered truck that weized noisily up the hill from the hotel. Now it's a smart white unit with onboard compactor and a eurobin lifter. It's a bit bigger, so it will be harder to get into all the places the old one managed.
There seems to a changing trend in visitor type. Day visitors down but weekend end up. Fedon seems to have spotted this as it's time table has a late run on Friday from KS and a similar return on Sunday. Both runs were very full this weekend just past.

Probably not so much a case of having spotted it as the company "Fedon Travel" being responsible for it.

Box fits OK in our fridge. Turned it up to 5 so it should be pretty cold when we next get to test it in about 4 hours time. A another new offer this year - "fishing & a lot more" - local offering trips for €150/day. Boat is slightly smaller than Kinygos II and not so well equipped/set up. Prospect of a verdant lawn awaits our return, though growth this last week should be more muted as there has been not interruptions to Wimbledon...... Just to clarify the fishing trip thing. Michalis’ boat is actually bigger than mine, but size isn’t everything I’m told! A/K EYA! Daily fishing trips and more... For more information call: 0030 6956617620, michalis. Michalis is doing commercial fishing trips for tourists and I am not. I am willing to take out one person, possibly two, if they understand that we are doing serious fishing; blue water trolling. By that I mean that the majority of the fish we catch are in the 1 – 3Kg range, but we are also liable to get the odd surprise. When this happens we need people to work together as a crew. So not a tourist trip! There are videos of last year’s adventures elsewhere to give the idea!If you want a tourist trip please go to Michalis. I am not trying to steal anybody’s business and I do not charge, or pay my crew for that matter! I do have to be careful about these points as I am sure you will understand. There are people on Halki who have to run businesses. As an aside; when we took the marlin to Babis, Michalis was there. His face was a picture!

Point well made Simon. Some of these rather naive, however innocently well intended, "feed back reports", can give rise to local bad feeling as we know only too well. Just saying!

Carol - as you know I don't like Retsina so I shall be making gin ice cubes. I've frozen left over wine before which is useful to add to sauces and gravies but gin cubes never occurred to me. Just thought - no doubt you probably never have any left over wine!!?? Only four weeks to go - can't wait!!

Pretty certain that gin won't freeze the same as vodka won't, at least not in a domestic freezer (it may go slushy which will just be the water part of it it freezing), I can, however state with some degree of confidence that it does work wonderfully well served in a tumbler in its liquid state when mixed with a decent tonic plus ice (water) and a slice!! 😋😋😋 ...Happy holidays all

“Alcohol” is shorthand for Ethanol or ethyl alcohol. It is totally miscible with water. It can be separated by distillation due to the difference in boiling point 78 degrees v 100 degrees. However 100% ethanol is not practicable because it absorbs water from the air to settle at about 70%. At the other end of the scale the freezing/melting points are far more disparate 0 degrees v – 114 degrees. So therefore alcohol can be separated from water by freezing just as efficiently as by distillation! Both are illegal in the UK without a licence! If you freeze low alcohol drinks you are just freezing the water but the matrix of ice will hold the alcohol. The higher the alcohol content the less solid matrix to hold it and you have a “slushy”
