Kathy, Petros is now in his very early seventies. If Villa Elsa was on the Laskarina prog., when you were there, and I think it was, then you will remember Nichola (Ftengia) as he is the owner.

Nick (Pondamos)'s brother Yiannis is still around. However, he and Apostolia retired a few years ago and their old taverna is where the shop is now. His other brother still keeps bees too.

Hi Kathy, Christine and Alex (Captains House) are still there I think, I saw them in May but not in October but that could just be that they weren't out and about at the same time as me. I first went to Halki in May 2001, it was only the second time I had been away on my own and I've been going back on my own ever since. I go in May and October and like just about everyone else there are always tears on the boat! I even cry on the middle Wednesday when I see people off on the boat and I can never talk about leaving, even thinking about it now I'm filling up!!! The only thing that keeps me going is knowing that I will be returning. You can't really describe the Halki effect to people that have never been, I always tell people that they wouldn't like it as I want to keep it to myself. It really is a special place and I'm sure you will love it when you go back next year

thanks everybody for all the updates on who is still about! I hadn't seen the photos on the locals page until you mentioned it carol, as Ive said,I am not very internet competent, so didn't know it was there!I cant believe the pics of Petros - he looks no different from when I last saw him, I obviously thought he was older than he was back then, he looks fantastic. I remember him as being a lovely warm man, its good to see him looking so well.I'm glad Yannis & Nick (Pondamos ) are still around, is Nick still working, or are his sons running Pondamos? I'm not sure about Villa Elsa, its hard to remember all the names after so long. I remember Angeli A & B most and Zifos was I think, new.All these things are lovely to be reminded of!

Cathy, I am so pleased you said that about getting upset on the middle wednesday, I absolutely hate saying goodbye to people and always get very upset as some of you know, part of it is that friends are leaving and the other bit is that you know you will be going home yourself the following wednesday.I thought I was the only really emotional one on here, except Lisa and now Cathy, good job we do not go on hols at the same time

kathy, on my last visit I did noticed Christine was not around so I called a friend last night. It seems they have not been in Halki all this year as Alex is unwell.

Any more wonderful memories of Halki, to warm the dull cold days?

Have been going to Halki off and on since 2000. I was there in May/June this year and know exactly what you mean about 'the leaving'. However, I was really made up on the ferry journey back to Rhodes - saw dolphins for the first time in those waters - such a shout went up from the ferry! Some small consolation for leaving but the Greeks do say that if you see dolphins, not only are they lucky but also you will return. Here's hoping for next year!

Re: Christine & Alex: I know Alex spent quite some time in hospital this year, but they were definitely there in May when we were there, and in October we saw them out and about and he looked a lot better. I don't know them personally so can't comment on his health, only to say that I've seen them!

Kathy, Julie et al - I think one of the places which anyone who has not been to Halki since the 1980s or 90s will find has changed considerably is the hotel. The former simple basic establishment with rather damp rooms (offset by waterfront setting and views) is now aiming at a more up-market image, with marble-clad reception, timber decking and decorative gravel covering the concrete outside area. Whole structure refurbished, old flat roof now tiled. Manolis, the one-time manager years ago, who appeared on the scene occasionally to harangue the Albanian waiter, is long gone. I expect the bookings are taken on a computer, too. Progress, I suppose.

G'day Amanda. You are correct about Christine and Alex Sakellarides being in Halki in October. They made a brief visit. I'm not sure who you were looking at in May this year but it certainly wasn't them. They have regrettably only been able to make that one visit this year.
