I now have a bit of time to show you pictures from sth and Lord Lucan of the mythical "caves". I will be fitting them into the "Coast" once I have the material I left in Pastida to ensure I have the positioning correct. The background is the geology/petrology of Halki. The island is limestone and this is a calcareous sedimentary rock. It goes from sediment derived from diatom shells, and other larger shells etc. as fossils, to chalk, to limestone, to marble. Pressure and heat causes re-crystallisation and with each step the rock is harder. It is still calcium carbonate which is subject to erosion and some parts of the rock are harder than others. Also the horizontal layers become pushed vertical. These caves are a washed out soft layer in a vertical orientation along the side of the coast. At another place a similar site has suffered a roof collapse and now there is just a spike of rock sticking up out of the sea alongside the coast. Here the roof still exists (no danger of imminent collapse!) allowing the brave to slip from a boat and swim through. Halcyon is small enough to get in close, KinygosII is not, which is why I rely a bit on others for these shots. They are worth a visit, but getting there...
