They are a lot slimmer and more elegant than the lumpy cicada! Wikipedia compares them with the damsel fly and the lacewing, to which I would add the crane fly (daddy-long-legs). They have the four wings of the first two, but a floppiness which reminds one of the crane fly, also its flight is similar, but without the dangly legs. I think they are in the UK, but rare. They need dry sandy soil for the larvae to dig that sand trap, and our wet weather probably doesn't help.
