Just been looking on the Sunvil site for next year (how desperate is that ). There are two places that caught our eye, Ormos on Samos and Icaria. I know we did walk to Ormos years ago when we stayed on Samos, but can't really remember it (I think I'm getting it mixed up with Aghios Georgos near Stoupa). Anyone been to either?

Dear Di, we went to Ormos, probably when the old King was on the throne - but in reality about 10 or so years ago. I am sure we went with Simply Greece, had a car included in the holiday price and stayed at a delightful little detached bungalow called Gallini Cottage. We had an enjoyable time, were shown much kindness from the owner of the house and he gave us a bottle of rather strange yellow looking ouzo to take home (that will show you how long ago it was). When I mentioned this to the rep she fell about laughing as what he'd done is to give us a bottle of his olive oil decanted into an ouzo bottle. It made for interesting tasting roast spuds. The car was a bonus to explore Samos and, it was just a stroll along the harbourside at Ormos to eat in the evening. We had two good holidays on Samos (prior to coming to Halki in 2005). Like all places it may well have changed but we have good memories of both Samos and Ormas. As I say, this report is a tad dated !

Hi James. Sounds like you were there roughly the same year as us. We stayed in Cambos and walked over to Ormos. I can remember there was a bl**dy big hill between the two but can't actually remember Ormos itself

Dear Di, there, as may be expected, there stacks of images on the Internet, but does this bring back memories ? Where we stayed was to the right of the harbour, very near to where there seems to be a disused factory of some sort. How well I recall a 'snake encounter' one morning when walking down the dirt track of our bungalow one morning.....enough said. Best wishes. www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKJjyOqfPj8

Di we went to Ormos in 2005 with Laskarina. It was a lovely place and although the beach was not great we used to walk to I think it was Cambos which had a beautful beach with big straw umbrellas. I always think of Manolis when I think of Ormos. He had a taverna on the harbourside with cages and cages of budgies. He ran the taverna with his wife and two ex wives!!!!! Strange set up but it seemed to work!!!!!! We loved it there but that was before we were well and truly hooked on Halki. ;D ;D

Dear Jane and Tony, thanks for that - in my first draft reply to Di, I did include a reference to a Taverna with lots of birds (in a cage) but I deleted it, thinking it might have been 'somewhere else', so I'm glad my memory holds up, albeit from time to time ! Ditto, your thoughts until we went to Halki for the first time. (It was blooming hot walking some of the South Downs Way today).

Dear Jane and Tony Neither Beacon Hill, South Harting nor the final onslaught of the Seven Sisters ever prepares me for the ascent from Dimintri's, past the School to Pondamos. ;D Quite a different type of 'blooming hot' walking I reckon (well that is my excuse and I'm sticking to it). Best wishes - it goes without saying enjoy Halki yourselves in 2012. JtB
