Hi all,
Coming in October, was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to rent a small boat with outboard for pottering around?
I have plenty of experience (RYA powerboat level 2, 16 years on boats in Poole harbour), & just want a small craft I can take out for fishing and hopping up the coast. Any suggestions gratefully received!
Cheers,
Tim

Hi Timmy and welcome, I have not heard of any boats for hire in Halki but others may know differently, hope you have a good holiday, is it your first visit ? ;D

Greetings Timmy I am afraid that it is almost certain that you will not be able to hire a boat. The waters can be quite dangerous with sudden wind changes and very few safe landing places. Plus virtually all the safe moorings in the harbour are taken up by local boats. I did borrow one once from a friend and it was more worry than it was worth. I ended up having to move it at night across the harbour in a raging gale to avoid it being smashed up on the rocks when it dragged its anchor. Not an experience I wish to repeat.

Just to confirm what others have said, I'm also pretty certain that small boat hire is not possible. I've done the sort of thing you have in mind in, for example, Paxos; but as far as I'm aware, there's nothing like that available on Halki. There's a small working boatyard near the hotel but it's not the sort of place which does boat hire. Kinygos is probably the one with the best local knowledge on the general topic of small boats and fishing so he may feel able to give you definitive information.

Hi guys,
Many thanks for all the info (even if it's not what I wanted to hear!). I'm sure we'll have an awesome time even without a boat - 1st time to Halki and v. excited.
Thanks again for getting back to me all,
All the best,
T

Timmy, As one who previously owned a boat in Halki, I can confirm that there is absolutely no craft hire of any kind available. Howard has pointed out some harsh truths and you will almost certainly get a feed back from Kinygos when he extracts his PC from under a pint beer mug ;D

Hi Kinygos, Many thanks for the offer, that's really kind of you- sounds awesome! I'm planning to bring some spinning and float fishing gear with me - do you think it's worth the hassle of getting fishing rods onto an Easyjet flight?
Cheers! Timmy

My fishing is fly, lure and bluewater trolling, if yours is with a coarse fishing background... I have done saltwater fly and light float fishing here in the past, but not recently. You do get a selection of small species, which is interesting.
You would need a KISS (or modern equivalent) case, or a telescopic rod which will go in a suitcase. My light stuff is in Rhodes, but I never use it!
You have to make your own decision I'm afraid!
Sorry, not very helpful!
