8-)Been back a week now and time for our Halki 2008 holiday report….. We bumped into old friends John and Fiona and baby Theo at Gatwick so that was a nice start, arriving at Halki in heavy humidity left us both sapped, the whole island was wrapped in mist. Our new accommodation was Villa Korali (the blue right hand one) and what a delight it was after the Hiona next door, for the first few days we just baked in the sun and struggled through the high humidity, jumping into the water instantly washed away the heat of the day and brought back memories from others years of going exactly the same.
Jane and I never really strayed off our terrace, but we did venture to Alimnia, the Hotel, ftengnia (never can spell that one) and Pondamos. The castle/monastery never even got a look in……………… we talked about nipping off to Kania but we just ran out of time……….
We celebrated Jane’s birthday at the Pizzeria with a nice cake from Theodosias, we just did’nt expect the impromptu singing of ‘Happy Birthday’…… The Hotel was just great, the rooms were nice, rates not too bad, well worth the wait.
We did the rounds of the Taverna’s, no names no pack drill, but one taverna insisted on serving up oven chips and cooked from frozen Pizza – why ? It was a joy to see Elini at the ‘take away’ and in full bloom with their first child expected in November (I think).
It was great just sitting on the terrace watching the big boats come and go, having a swim and drinking the odd beer/Ouzo/Metaxa, the time just flew by.
We tried to get past 11pm during the festival celebrations but alas this year we were just too knackered.
Pity the drains stank the harbour area for a few days, but that has all been sorted. Another bit of fun was when the ballast boat came in one night about 10.30pm and hit the jetty ‘quite hard’ causing all sorts of very loud objections from the boats captain over the PA system, the locals thought his language was ‘very colourful’….
Rumour was that it could have been George Armani in that BIG GREY gin palace that was moored up over the festival celebrations, but who knows (who cares!).
Did anyone notice how the concrete on the jetty had broken up, apparently it was caused by an ‘earthquake’ earlier in the year – again a reliable local source of information………
We saw the Catman and sadly noticed that he looked a lot older this year. Sadly (for us) we also noticed a huge reduction in the cat population from 2 years ago, but we still recognised a few old faithfull’s from the harbour front.
We read a few books, swam a lot, rested a lot, ate well and met up with old friends.
Another lovely Halki holiday drew to a close, we will be back.
Pete’n’Jane.

Bout time too Glad to hear you had a great time . I think thats the beauty of that side of the harbour ..you don't have to leave your terrace . If you thought it was humid when you arrived you should have seen it the previous week Apparently the big grey yacht 'The Tatania' is Greek owned ..we did see a bloke come off ( Its featured in the 'yacht spot' on Symi Greece -apparently it went there the day after Halki ) Agree with you over the smell ....it was horrendous ! we changed seats about 4 times at the grill house . and the cat man ..bless him we had a drink on the terrace of the hotel but didn't go in ..it looks lovely I went to Kania ....well ..sort of ....I went on the bus ;D we got the bus home from the square on lunchtime as we had lots of shopping and we went via Kania ..it did look lovely but there was no way I'd manage that walk twice in one day !!.I'm such a lightweight We noticed the cracks in the concrete , I wondered how it had happened . The festival passed for us in a blur ..because we were over at Ftenagia we hardly heard a thing ..c'ept No1 son not creeping in at 5.30 !
