There is a coast of Halki few people get to see. Certainly at one time the ferries used to do “Round the island trips”. Do they still offer this? It is true to say that the moment has to be picked to do it, as the region called Kafali, the northeast headland, can be a bit nasty even when the rest is calm. Planning a trip for a collection of tourists a week ahead is a pointless occupation for the ferry people because the weather will invariably be unfavourable. If this happens the tourists will look at the harbour and say, “But the sea is calm! They are just making excuses!” Conversely the ferrymen cannot say “We can do it NOW!” with no notice because no-one will turn up! Have boat will travel! On 21/09/10, Chalkibert and I took our friend Sari on a fishing trip. We decided that the sea was right to do the “Round the island trip”. The fish, after all, can be anywhere. The following pictures show the seldom seen side of Halki. If the small beaches look nice, remember that the prevailing wind is from the north and they can take the sea full on, worse yet the weather can change all too quickly. We had problems with photographs as the sun was over the island and the shots had to be oblique to counteract this. We picked up a couple of fish, and then we got a triple header. Where? Kefali of course! Poor Sari had to take the wheel just where the sea was most disturbed. Controlling the boat in a swirling sea at tick over speed is tricky and she rose to the moment admirably. Luckily, that saved her taking compromising pictures of Chalkibert and me trying to sort out fish on adjacent rods avoiding a tangle. It also meant no pictures of Kefali. Finally an easy quiz; where is Chalkibert fighting his fish?

In the sixth picture, the "Burning Cave" can clearly be seen, high up and slightly to right of centre. A small black blob.

Could be "off" Pondamos facing Trachia?

Which is, of course, the correct answer, but then as an ex Halki boat owner the question was far too easy for you! This second shot would have been too easy for everyone.

Thanks for the photos Simon ;D I see Sari has taken on my photographer role ;D We did the round the island trip twice many years ago and it does give you a very different perspective of the island, unfortunately on one of the trips it got very rough people were being sick everywhere, not pleasant at all. The ferry used to anchor off a very pretty cove for people to swim to shore, we have photos somewhere but I think they are in the depths of the loft

This is another view not often seen. sth & I were headed to Nipouri (probably not the name the locals use) and Nisaki obscures the village making Halki look uninhabited. The bearing is roughly NE, course 130. I haven't made it to Glyfada this year yet due to an unfavourable swell every day. That is another place where you have to pick the day according to the sea state. This was the day of nine fish and leaping dolphins!
