As I was shambling about attempting to get to Kelia last week I happened upon this shed snake skin. Luckily I didn't come across the ex-owner but I was a bit more careful where I put my feet after that... I have only ever seen one very large dead black snake & a fleeting glimpse of one other in the hills. Anyone shed (no pun intended) any light on the type of the owner ??

:)we saw a dead snake in corfu once. ...best kind to see unless it's under glass. Don't know about your one,but it reminds me of the thing we have to keep our cables under control.

I think that skin is from one of the big black "egg" snakes. As far as I know the only poisonous Greek snakes are vipers, which makes them short & fat, not long & thin. They appear to be marked in a diamond pattern like a diamond back rattlesnake.
The only snake I have been involved with was a pencil thin green one which I removed from a property and released when I was on the way to the boatyard some years ago. This was at the request of a near hysterical lady.
Funny thing, you ladies all love little kittens and cute fluffy bunnies, and not snakes.
Snakes eat cute fluffy ratties and mousies; nasy creatures snakes!
Hmm!
Guess I can never change human nature, but snakes have been here from before the dinosaurs and, of course us, so please don't be nasty to them!
Cute little ratties with their little wibbly noses and whiskers, Ahhhhhhhh!

Thanks kinygos, thought you would have some info. The skin was about 5-6 foot so don't think it could have been the viper. Must have been the Egg snake. Found a site with a bit of info and as you say there main plus is eating fluffy rats and mice. Yummy. www.ellada.com/grarr14.html

Was it one of these We saw this on Kefalonia but not sure what type it was. We also sat in a taverna in Stoupa one day and watched a snake (which I thought was a lizard at first as I could only see the front half) stalking a mouse with the biggest ears I've ever seen We also witnessed a Greek waiter moving the fastest I have ever seen when he saw it ;D ;D

Some years on Nisyros I was on a scooter going towards the volcano, when I saw a snake crossing the road. It was a long one - as wide as the road. It raised its head when it saw me, but I turned round quickly. The following day in the same area I saw part of a dead one - a good six inches across.
