Have any of you been to both Halki and Symi, and if so which do you prefer? Is Halki quieter than Symi ?

DH and I went to Symi several times in the late 80s & early 90s. Got to say I think I prefer Halki. It is not as stunningly beautiful as Symi but a lot quieter. I think some people might consider it too quiet in fact, particularly early or late season I would like to return to Symi one day but wonder if it is just too big now for my tastes. Can't imagine what it's like with cars etc. The first time we went to Symi on our honeymoon, there was only a bus, 3 taxis and a few motorbikes We are thinking of maybe doing a two-centre type thing next year if we can organise it with flights and ferry crossings. HTH

Hi Joanie, Halki is tiny compared to Symi, there are only two beaches with sunbeds although some others accessible by foot or boat, only 7or 8 tavernas around the harbour and 1 on each of the main beaches. There is only one road so very few vehicles as there is nowhere to go unless you want to go up to the monastery or castle, like Jennifer says it does not suit everyone but it is our little piece of heaven even if it is only for 2 weeks a year. Symi looks beautiful but for us I think we would find it too busy and bustling after going to Halki for so long ;D

I must admit I love the fact that everything in Halki is within staggering distance (except the castle & monastery of course)

Give it a go Joanie I am sure you would not be dissapointed, it is small enough to be quite a sociable place if that is what you want, as you will have gathered a few of us have got to know each other over the years and formed friendships but equally if you just want a quiet holiday that is possible as well

I love them both. Made my 3rd visit to Halki 2 weeks ago, had to come home early because of family illness,(thankyou to Zifos for help in getting flights). Halki is wonderful for relaxing and the ambiance is brilliant. My brother is making a good recovery now so I've grabbed a quick week on Symi (3rd visit). Symi is more cosmopolitan, but the walks are brilliant and I love the music festival. Chorio is superb. They both have things that pull me. I think they both have lots to offer to visitors who love Greece as I do.

We went to Symi in 1984 (?the year the grand Hotel in Brighton got bombed). We were the only northerners there as everyone seemed to have travelled with Tjaerborg and were totally ignored by our fellow holidaymakers. We went with Budget Travel which went bust whilst we were there , the room was shared with massive orange flying cockroaches, I trod on what I thought was a tarantula until I realised that it was just the discarded skin, and our courier was arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling (they were very paranoid about being so close to Turkey in those days ). We were also charged an exorbitant price in a taverna until they realised we weren't day trippers and were there for 2 weeks (they took the bill away and halved it). Despite all that we had a great time ;D ;D, we were given presents off all the shopkeepers and were invited to a wedding on the beach with the big cliff and little chapel - can't remember what it was called

I've always fancied Symi but since finding Halki I worry that I will find it too busy ( we went to a small resort in Corfu -yes they do still exsist a few years ago and whilst everyone else was saying how quiet it was we couldn't get our heads round the traffic ) But I can see the attraction and will one day give it a go ( thats why I'd like to have a taster first in a day trip )

Liz, the only problem with a day trip is its always busy when the boat docks, lots of hustle and bustle. But if you get up into Chorio, its amazing and then a walk down to Pedi beach, but I dont know how long you get on these trips. Its so beautiful,i think you'll like it
