Crikey - I remember Matala, I went backpacking there back in 1980 (around Greece on a $1 a day........ who wrote those books ?).
We went there on the premise that others had said you could sleep in the hippy caves, I vaguely remember getting there either by walking or hitch hiking (could not afford a bus) seeing a small taverna on the beach and then seeing dozens of other untidy backpackers all wanting to sleep in the caves, I remember the caves more for using as a toilet than to sleep in.
I slept on the beach in the end.
Happy days.
