I'm reading Christopher Brookmyre "Snowball in Hell" at the moment am just coming out of a Brookmyre binge. He's a brilliant writer. Met him recently at a charity event where he was reading part of one of his books and it was brilliant. Shame he's a St. Mirren supporter really.

The fish terminator!
I guess we are all fans of Sherlock Holmes, perhaps mostly from the dramatisations. It would not be great literature, but perhaps "classic". I decided to read the collected stories about "The Great Detective" who predates CSI. I was profoundly disappointed! The monumental inaccuracies leap out of the page. I would cite "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" as particularly awful.
Perhaps for some books it is better that way!

Well guys - I've been on an Haruki Murakami binge on Halki during the Summer - and having read his description of arriving on a small island north west of Rhodes in 'Sputnik Baby', I suspect he may have been there. Wells seem to come up in his books a lot - I reckon he's been up to the castle - what do you think? No More Murakami for me until next year's Halki expeditions, I'm saving them.

Oh and Lynn - what's wrong with St Mirren? At Least they play in the right colours. Could be worse, he could be a supporter of the dirty Killie. I'm obviously an Ayr United supporter.

Here's an opinionated remark; The best book ever written is "The Grapes of Wrath".
On a lighter note, I used to have a friend, now sadly dead, who wrote for various comcs, most notably "June and Schoolfriend". His longest running strip was "Winnie's private Witch". Very often, when the eponymous witch said a spell, he would make it a verbatim chunk of "Fiinegan's Wake"; he hoped that somewhere out there, a Joyce fan would be reading his work to his daughter...
