Hi Jan, We also go on 12th August, flying from Leeds & landing about 3.15pm Greek time. Its a long time since I was last in Halki, I can't begin to tell you how much I am looking forward to it! ;D There are 5 of us ( 3 teenagers!) Like all of us, you are sure to fall in love with the place. Your first sight of the island, and Halki will have cast its magic spell!!
Wow! Thanks for the quick reply, Liz. We're booked in the Kiki Sudios and because we've booked at the last minute I'm not expecting it to be the Ritz but do you know anything about them? Information on the travel agents website is limited but it says it's self-catering. I'm not sure if I need to take my mini kettle and 'shower' towels as well as beach towels. Also, I have a few more questions if you don't mind... We only use a VISA Debit card (not VISA credit card), would that be accepted in the ATM? Is it possible to book a trip to Rhodes? I've seen lots of trips from Rhodes to Halki but not the other way around. Does the supermarket cater for tourists e.g. sun cream, snorkel/flippers or will I need to take everything we'll be likely to need. I'm really sorry if these appear to be daft questions but in the last 23 years we've only ever been abroad 4 times so I think I'm just feeling anxious about everything. Thanks.
Hi Kathy, thanks for your reply. We're flying from Gatwick and should land at 3pm local time so maybe we'll be on the same transfer boat? I'll look out for the 3 teenagers! Halki looks idyllic.
LOL .don't worry .I'm not familiar with the Kiki but I'm sure someone else will be . I don't think you will have to take shower towels but again I'm not sure having never stayed there ( rubbish aren't I )
as for the supermarkets yes they do cater for snorkles etc ....Rhia's shop does all that kind of stuff and you can buy almost anything at Petros's Emporium ( under the trees ) and theres also the shop run by ..and I am ashamed to say his name escapes me ( we call him Maradonna absolutley lovely man and family )
If you need anything in particular like anti allergy suncream ..then I'd take it with you As for the trips to Rhodes I've never done one ...couldn't muster up the energy but I believe they go quite early in the morning
Hi Jan and a big welcome to the board ;D I will answer what I can and leave someone else to help out with things I dont know. If you want to go to Rhodes for the day you just hop on the early morning 6am ferry to Kamiros Scala and then catch a bus into Rhodes town from outside the taverna on the main road, on the return you need to get the bus back to the port by, I think 14.30 someone will no doubt correct me if my timings are wrong.
You will certainly be able to buy snorkels and flippers at a couple of the shops, if you like to use a particular suncream or if you are fair skinned then I would suggest you bring your own, I need factor 15+ and it is not always available.
You should be supplied with towels for your accomodation but definitely bring beach towels.
One thing I always reccomend is a pair of sensible shoes/sandals, the paths around the village and to Ftenagia beach are fairly uneven and not really suitable for heels also the path to your accomodation could be up an incline.
I do reccomend that you do not rely completely on the ATM, it is much more reliable than it used to be but it does sometimes run out of money and it can be 24 hrs before it is filled. Hope this helps answer some of your questions ;D
Thanks for the info, hopefully someone who knows of the Kiki will add a comment. I did have a chuckle about your Maradonna reference, what a wonderful image I have of him! As for not being able to muster up the energy for a day trip? I like it I think I'm going to have a fabulously relaxing holiday; our (mine and my husband's) batteries definitely need re-charging this year.
Believe me he looks just like him ;D We used to do the Rhodes trip most years but now we just get there and do nothing, we did however drag ourselves to Alimnia last year, a real deserted island ;D
LOL Hi Carol, thanks for your reply. I'm feeling a little less anxious about the holiday now I know that I can get supplies from the shop. As for the sensible shoes/sandals, I've already got those because I had an Achilles tendon injury last year so I have to go for sensible/comfy rather than heels/fashion now - oh the joys of being middle-aged! I'm hoping we'll have enough currency with us but my concern about whether our debit card would be accepted in the ATM or not was more as an emergency back-up. Have you used a VISA Debit card in the ATM before?
I couldn't get the machine to work for me but others swear by it ..maradonna ...well... you'll know when you see him ..he's lovely, my hubbie went through the whole 'hand of God' routine every night
:)Hi Jan,hubby and i had our first visit to halki in may and are booked up for next year! ;D Something we have never done before. It is a wonderful place and i hope you love it as much as we did. I would take all toiletries with me as they are very expensive out there and tend to be in big sizes.
Hi Jan,because I haven't been to Halki for a long time, I had as many questions as you. I read back through all the old posts which answered a lot of my questions, and also gave me information about other things I hadn't even thought of! Hope this helps! See you on 12th!
Hi Kathy, I've just finished reading through all the messages on accommodation and will try to work my way through some of the others to see if I can find any other useful info - thanks for the tip. The housework and my marking can wait; I'd much rather read about Halki!
