They're nuts Kathy from a cob tree otherwise known as filberts or hazelnuts. Although I firmly believe (and hopefully Carol will back me up here) that cob nuts taste different. Perhaps it's because they still have their overcoats on when you buy them in the Garden of England (Kent). Strangely enough I live very very close to the Garden of Scotland where strawberries, raspberries, tayberries and loganberries are grown. ;D ;D This thread has come a long way from "a week in Corfu"

And I thought that Kentish Cobs were world famous! The only trouble here in Kent is that you have to get to them before the squirrels. As for the weather, it's better than Scotland but not as good as Halki, though the scenery is better. If you want to challenge that, Google Earth Frittenden before you do. This is all getting well away from Halki!

I just asked my other half .....and he hasn't heard of world renowned Kentish cobs either! Obviously a pair of ignorant Scouse Scallies! ;D

Yes Lynn, a good description, hazelnuts with their coats on, but somehow they are more sweet and moist than a normal hazelnut and only ever seemed available for a very short time if my memory serves me right ;D Apologies for hijacking this thread ;D

Thinking of childhood in Kent what about the oast houses and the smell of hops in September - still makes me nostalgic, however I think Halki in September will be preferable.

On the subject of alcohol, there are still plenty of Oast houses in Kent, I am looking at one as I type. But, sadly very few hops being grown. It's the fault of all you Amstel, Becks and Mythros drinkers. You only need hops for proper beer!
