Some of the owners are that way inclined. Some more than others!! Bit of a bummer for you and I hope you get fixed up. Unfortunately, conference times have always left independent travellers out in the cold. I decided to avoid them years ago. I certainly would not wish to arrive during conference without a bed booked. Good luck.

Macca, that is awful, to do that at such late notice the owners really should be named and shamed Have you tried the obvious ones like the captains house ? It may be worth asking about Villa Yorgos, I know there was a vacancy earlier on for the following week, you can email Caroline on carolineroot@rho.forthnet.gr she will usually reply very quickly. Good luck and let us know when you get something.

Apparently, people who don't ever rent their property in normal circumstances, have been approached by the organisers of this conference .. because the usual independent rentals don't cover the enormous number of beds needed. Everywhere, from Ftenagia to the Captain's House to Argyrenia rooms, has been contacted. Schoolteachers have been asked to vacate their long-term rentals to accommodate delegates.Private householders are clearing out their summer bolt-holes to help ... Amanda mentioned this conference a while ago. If you make a booking on a private/indepedent basis, make sure you pay a deposit as it may make a difference in the long run.

I think its a disgrace and quite puzzelling that a long term rental ( I think macca said he was going for two months ) would be cancelled with three days notice for a conference which will only give them 2 or three days rent

That's absolutely dreadful macca and I'm so sorry for you. When I advised about the conference back in May I was really aiming at those people who like to turn up without a booking and take 'pot luck' with accommodation. I certainly never imagined that someone with a firm and lengthy booking would be booted out.
I'll rack my brains and if I think of anything I'll contact you straight away. Do let us know if you get fixed up.
Good luck!

Liz, there are a few owners on Halki who have "their own agenda". What may be a disgrace to you and me is neither that nor a puzzle to them. There are far deeper ramifications here than merely a last minute cancellation. Promises and ethics play no part. I have no idea who Macca had his booking with and have no wish to know but, reading his initial posting, I have my own strong suspicions. With that, I'm out.

Hopefully Macca will get something suitable, in which case, a little careful and discreet detective work around the harbour, may clarify the situation. ;D

Macca, I know it's not much consolation, but is the owner of the accommodation you had booked willing to let you "have it back" once the conference is over? All I was thinking was that if the worst came to the worst, rather than losing the whole lot, you could maybe get somewhere on Rhodes for a couple of days (I don't know how long the conference is on for). Good luck finding somewhere anyway.

There will probably be an even bigger one in September.

This thread has kinda "wandered"! Anyway, it seems that the later June conference (Eliamep) is only 1/3 the size of this juggernaut one and it's actually the old "September" one, that has changed dates .As far as I've heard, nobody who has booked and paid a deposit (that bit's VERY important in Greece) has had their booking cancelled. In Greece, if you haven't paid a deposit, then you haven't got a booking.
