The northern European may say; "Poisoning animals is just plain cruel" What does the Halki person say? Until all, or at least the majority, of Halki people agree it will be another case of the Germans/Brits telling them what to do. There is already a monstrous reaction to the idea that the Germans are telling the Greeks how to run their country. They want to do things the way they have always done them; the Greek way. Here is a humorous example of a child trying to alter traditional practice. The reluctant canibalWould you take kindly to a Jain telling you that you are cruel? JainismWho'd be a moderator?

I can't understand why this discussion is moving in such a direction. With all respect to the good Greek traditions, from my point of view the poisoning of cats should not be placed in context with traditions. We all know that the situation of the animals on Halki is much better than on other islands but it should be allowed to draw attention to problems. Especially from people who look after the animals on Halki. Moreover the letter offers a cooperation to solve the problem. Of course I can only speak for myself. I do not go to Halki (already booked for Mai) to advise the Greeks to take over the German lifestyle or to telling them what do do. The opposite is more likely to be comfortable here. I want to escape from the German lifestyle for a few weeks and I think most of the German and UK Halki visitors want that too. Hopefully! @liz The letter was sent to the mayor of Halki and to all friends of the animal welfare in GB, France, Greece, Germany.... I did not asked for a permission to publish the letter but I think the animal welfare will not have a problem with the fact that it is made available to other friends of Halki. Helmut

I hope you do not think I am speaking against you Helmut. I do support your cause. If you were in the group last autumn you will know that I provided a fish for your evening meal! A fish which apparently was not possible because it was not caught the Greek way and my system is no good! Liz: since the posting of the letter was from the source there should not be a problem of confidentuality. Posting any reply from the Dimos unless supplied directly could be a breach of confidentiality.

Dears all, havent`t been here for a while .....
yes, the Animal Help Chalki sent this letter to the Major and a copy to some friends for information. Now it happened, that it became an official letter, ok,, And a discussion. We are very sad about the recent poisonning of cats. The last 3 years we neutered there over 300 cats, treated them with medicine, gave them food... Since last year, there are more dogs, our vet talked to their owners about dog-keeping, gave them medicine. But we cannot neuter dogs in Chalki. It has to be done in a practice under sterile and other conditions. We were afraid to see now more puppies, they need food, education and vaccacination ! And their owner has to do it. A lot of stray dogs,as we know from other contries and islands are negative to the tourism. We love cats and dogs and they have the right to live with good conditions. Poisonning animals is the wrong way and we do not accept it. Many people in Chalki agree to our work there, some not. We help to feed the cats, so they don`t bet a lot at the restaurants tables. I know other places in the world, where hungry animals sit around and you cannot eat !. We all love Halki and more of our friends come as tourists, it could be a little paradise - We have to find a solution whith the dogs mass at the piazza, we look for kreative ideas We are in Halki in April. We will see. Maria
